What is miraaa?

MIRAAA Media Festival is a tri-city experimental media festival, will take place over three consecutive weekends in August 2026 in McAllen, Laredo and Eagle Pass. Our mission is to empower artists from the south Texas-Mexico borderlands to explore non-traditional storytelling through collaboration and experimentation with the intention of illuminating under-represented border narratives. This year, we are opening the festival to artists / creatives / filmmakers / media-makers / experimenters from these regions, as well as others across the Texas-Mexico border.

BORDER

ARTS

2026 manifesto

Like cinema itself, a river is composed of light and sound waves. It moves rhythmically in cycles of drought and flood, in changing shorelines. It has the ability to transform what it touches.

The river – our river –  has always been here. Long before borders, before walls, before the narratives that have been concocted and imposed on it.

For those who live alongside the Río Grande / Río Bravo, the river is more than a geographical boundary. It is a shifting ecosystem that sustains life across the region. It is a living presence – a witness, a relative, a force that carries memory through the land along its currents. Its waters hold histories of movement, migration, resistance, and everyday life.

As this year’s festival expands across the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, and Eagle Pass, we look to the river as a shared link to our communities. Rather than approaching the river only as a political boundary, we invite artists to explore it as a space of reflection, abstraction, and imagination.

The works presented in this edition approach the river as a living archive – a place where images, histories, and futures continue to flow.

With this in mind, we invite filmmakers and artists from the RGV, Laredo, Eagle Pass and neighboring Mexican cities to submit their work to the festival.
